Graze the Tweed Valley: Discover the Marvels of Cheese, Herb, Avocados and Cane Sugar Rum

Time: 8.30am – 4.15pm
Hop on the foodie bus and discover the delights in our abundant Northern Rivers backyard. From the luxe Elements of Byron Resort & Spa in Byron Bay, we’ll make our way north to Burringbar, home to an array of local producers including Pocket Herbs and Cheeses Loves You. Taste your way through a selection of minature herbs before balancing your palate with an array of superior Jersey cow’s milk cheeses. With some time to digest, we’ll meander through beautiful countryside to Cudgen for a tour of a local farm and hear about the growth and changes they have made from an avocado plantation to a small crop organic principled farm before enjoying a foraging lunch feast of local produce. Making our way back into the heart of the valley, stop by the Tweed River, amongst the lush sugar cane and drink in the delights of the Husk Distillery, made famous for its Ink Gin as well as its selection of Agri Rum. The day finishes back at Elements of Byron Resort & Spa where you are welcome to join your new found friends at the bar!
Introducing our Harvest Food Festival Tour Leader: Matt Weinert, DPI
Matt Weinert is the NSW DPI banana industry development officer based at Wollongbar. He has a love of all things horticultural with 25 years experience in horticultural RD&E across multiple scientific disciplines and crops. A plant pathologist by training, a desire to understand why growers don’t adopt R&D led him to industry development. His passion is fruit crops and he often (half heartedly) jokes that his major interest in horticulture is culinary.
8.30am: Meet at Elements of Byron Resort. For those who need caffeine, buy a coffee at Elements of Byron Resort & Spa before we head off!
9.30 – 10.15am: Pocket Herbs
Pocket Herbs & Produce offers the finest micro greens, culinary baby leaf herbs and specialty greens to fine dining establishments, caterers and retail grocers throughout Australia. Take a tour of their greenhouses and farm where they focus on growing the highest quality, gourmet micro greens and herbs.
10.30am – 11.30am : Cheeses Loves You
Our second stop is ‘Cheeses Loves You’ where we’ll have a behind-the-scenes peek into the world of artisan cheesemaking. Deb Allard, AKA “the big cheese” will delight us with her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for everything cheesey!! Visit the dairy, meet some calves and discover varieties of cheese you may have never known while learning how easy it is to make your own.
12.00 – 1.30pm : Farm & Co.
Originally an avocado farm, Farm & Co today follows organic principles. For a true paddock-to-plate experience, we’ll enjoy a sumptuous Foragers Platter packed with fresh produce from the farm as well as local produce from around the Northern Rivers. We will join Michelle for a guided walking tour where we will hear all about her beautiful farm.
2.15 – 3.30pm : Husk Distillers
Enjoy ‘Cocktails in the Field’ and a unique cellar-door experience at the innovative craft rum & gin distiller – Husk Distillers. Be one of the first in the region to see, hear, smell and taste the workings of a real live ‘paddock to bottle’ distillery making gin and rum from their beautiful sugarcane plantation in Tumbulgum.
4.15pm : Elements of Byron Resort & Spa
The day ends back at Elements of Byron Resort & Spa were you may choose to relax and unwind or de-brief with your new friends and drink at the bar!
